temptation (4B)

The readings this week was on kids who had been tested on. The test was for boys and girls that were four years old. The kids were put in a room with a marshmallow infront of them, if they waited 15minutes and not eat the marshmallow they could get a second one but, if they ate the marshmallow they could not get the second one.  This demonstrates delay gratification. Delay gratification is the ability to resist the temptation for an immediate reward and wait for a later reward.

From the readings and videos that I have watched and read this week I have came up with many different questions. My first question is that I didn’t understand how they are able to base someone’s success on how they acted when they were four years old. If I took this test when I was four I would have ate the marshmallow probably even before the instructor walked out of the room. I was born with ADD but was not diagnosed with it until I was 8 years old. When I was little it was so hard for me to even hold a pencil. With having undiagnosed ADD I would have failed that test and the instructors of the test would have said that I wouldn’t be very successful, as I got older. I beg to differ, now that I was treated and receiving the help that I needed I believe that I was a successful high school student and I hope to take my success into my future years.

Another question I have is that are their parents teaching them delayed gratification. As I was growing up my parents would always tell me that if I got straight A’s on my report card they would give me $100.00. I never did receive straight A’s but they saw how hard I was working to get straight A’s. I had multiple tutors and would stay after school or go in early for extra help. It has been like that from 7th grad to my senior year of constant tutors and extra help. My parents never did give me to money because I never deserved it but in result of me trying my best they bought me a car. Even though I was taught delayed gratification growing up I don’t believe that I was at age 4.

service learning 4I (17)

I am a player on the southern connecticut state university womens softball team. We participate in many different service projects all year. We just recently participated in the special Olympics. I do realize that it was not on campus but because of softball I honestly do not have time to take place in any service work occurring on campus. We are also participating in a walk for liver cancer this Sunday and many different service works all year. Working with and helping all the kids who are unfortunately have problems was a great feeling. They all won a prize and awarding them with a medal and seeing how happy they all got was a image I wont ever forget. They felt proud of themselves and special. The team helped with different skills for softball. We had a hitting, running, ground balls and a station to see who could throw the farthest. After the skills they had games where we would announce their names through a mega phone and keep the score. As we said their name through a mega phone and cheered for them seeing them smile was heart warming.

good things come to those who wait (4a)

I tore my right meniscus in my summer of 10th grade playing softball. The doctor told me that I needed surgery and would only have 30% of my meniscus left in my knee. Also, there was floating cartledge in my knee that they would have to clean up. If I got surgery I would never be able to play soccer in my junior year. In my junior year I was starting forward for the girls soccer team. That year we won many different championships. We were conference champions; county champions, Long Island champions, New York State champions and we placed as the 9th best team in all of the United States, which included public, catholic and private high schools. Being a part of such a successful soccer team was a feeling I cant explain. The memory and feeling of running and hugging my teammates as the referrer blew his whistle at the end of our championship game is something I will never forget. As we won not only did our coaches and teammates run on the field to hug one another but our friends and family ran on after us. Our game took place at SUNY Cortland. As we had our 5 hour ride back to Long Island the principal of our high school informed the town of what our team has accomplished. They had the news paper publishers there, the town fire trucks, teachers, our classmates and all our family waiting at the school for our bus to pull into our school’s parking lot. As we pulled up everyone cheered and the fire trucks rang their alarms. As we walked off the bus with tears of happiness in our eyes and sadness that our season was officially over and we would not be able to every play together since unfortunately the seniors would not be coming back next year I felt like a movie star. It was a feeling I wont ever forget for as long as I live. I wish every day that I could go back to that day and relive it. The gym now has a huge picture of the team and poster that says all our names and the accomplishments we have won that year hanging  up. Going back into that gym and looking at that accomplishment hanging on the wall is such a proud moment for me. I met my best friends playing soccer and having that accomplishment is definitely something we will be talking about as we all grow old together. This is why I believe good things come to those who wait, if I got that surgery I would have missed out on the most amazing thing to ever happen to me.

My declared major right now is athletic training and I am having some trouble in some of my classes. My roommate is a nursing major who is taking very difficult classes that I eventually will have to also take. I know that if I work hard I will be able to do it. After my four years of becoming a athletic trainer I hope to go to school again and become a Physical Therapist. I know that it will be a long journey but if I be patient and work hard in all my classes the outcome will be positive and I get a job of becoming a Physical Therapist that I have always dreamed of since I was a little girl. I believe this will be worth waiting for because it is a goal I have set for myself that I want to accomplish. Not only will I accomplish that goal but also will have a very good job that will support my family.

I believe us as americans have instant gratification. Do something that makes us happy motivates us to keep doing it. Having something you enjoy doing is a positive unlike doing something that you have to force yourself to do because you don’t enjoy it.  Just like from the readings the kids couldn’t resist not eating the marshmallow because its something the enjoy.

“There is nothing good or bad but thinking makes it so” (3A)

While trying to read this quote and realize what Shakespeare’s meaning behind this quote I realized that everyone has control of his or her own outcome. By this I mean that if you think before acting you are able to control the outcome of a situation. For example, if you have a test in a class that you really want to get a good grade on and your entire floor is going out that night should you go out or stay in or study? If you think and do the right thing as to staying in and studying you would get a good grade but if you go out and don’t study your grade will be bad as to the outcome of the situation. From Shakespeare saying “There is nothing good or bad but thinking makes it so” he means that as long as you think before acting you can take control of the outcome of a situation.

Intrinsic Motivation vs Extrinsic Motivation:
Extrinsic motivation occurs when we are motivated to perform a behavior or engage in an activity in order to earn a reward or avoid a punishment.
Intrinsic motivation refers to motivation that comes from inside an individual rather than from any external or outside rewards, such as money or grades.
This quote relates to manly to extrinsic motivation. It relates to extrinsic motivation because you think before acting so you have a positive outcome. In extrinsic motivation you are able to control the outcome based on thinking before acting just like the quote by Shakespeare says. It does not relate to Intrinsic Motivation but it will come from inside you so your not going to think about the outcomes you are going to do what you want because you enjoy doing it.

Growth mindset vs. fixed mindset
In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort. They’re wrong.
In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Virtually all great people have had these qualities.

Fixed: Does not apply to the quote because fixed mindset people believe that what is done is done and that they cant not change anything.
Growth: Does apply to the quote because growth mindset people believe that they can get better so they will think about what they have to do to improve and see the positive outcome in the head.

Motivation (3V)

Motivation: the reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way.
Motivation (own): pushing yourself to have a positive outcome in the end.

This word relates to Inquiry because we are talking about motivation in class. We are discussing how motivation leads to success. If you are not motivated you will not be able to accomplish as many things as you would like and it won’t be as efficient. Having motivation is something that you are born with you either have it or you don’t. I would say that I am a motivated person because I am a sore loser. I don’t like not succeeding in anything I do.
In my statistics class we are learning how to graph. We are currently doing a stem and leaf graph that is used when have a lot of data that you are trying to graph.
In my media studies class we are learning about media and how it is used all over the world. Media is a way of communication to others, a way of entertainment, a way to find out about news and sporting events, a way of listening to music and a way to social medias. Media is a form of culture. In most countries you can see media everywhere you go. We are learning about the culture and strategies of media and how it tries to persuade the audience to buy their product.

"Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy."

Study Hall (3I)

My quiet place to study is in study hall. I love going there because everyone is getting his or her work done and there is absolutely no talking. The football coach and the girls and boys basketball head coach watch over us to make sure no one is on their phones, using their laptops for non educational purposes and that no one talks. All freshman and transfer athletes have to do 5 hours of study hall a week or else we are penalized. You can only stay in study hall for 3 hours maximum, which I usually do. I usually do more then 5 hours because going to study hall really helps me get all my work done. If I study in my room I get distracted and talk to my roommate or watch television or use my phone every 5 minutes. Knowing at study hall that I cannot do those things helps me get my work done faster and more efficiently. Study Hall takes place in moral hall in a lecture room.
